Bovine Ephemeral Fever – with Dr Lyndell Stone

health No Comments »

Bovine Ephemera Fever (BEF) is commonly known as Three Day Sickness.
Whilst three day sickness is relatively common on the coast, frequently occurring in late summer or autumn, we have had very little virus transmission during the previous two to three years of drought. Producers should be prepared that any cattle born on or introduced to the coast particularly after autumn 2017 (last period of BEF transmission) could be affected by three day sickness until mosquitos disappear with cold
weather.
Cattle older than about four years, that were born on the coast, most likely have been infected before and probably have good immunity.
BEF causes a short but significant fever, drooling, shivering, a discharge from eyes and nose, lameness and muscular soreness. Animals may become recumbent for a day or two. For the most part, BEF is a mild transient illness hence the name ‘three day sickness’. But some animals can be more significantly affected and cattle deaths can result. Thus the disease and the
need to manage cases shouldn’t be underestimated.
In particular heavy animals such as bulls and big cows may be most severely affected. A transient infertility in bulls can occur and a small proportion of pregnant cows can abort, presumably from the high fever.
To find out more about caring for stock affected by BEF please watch Dr Stone’s video ‘Managing Bovine Ephemeral Fever’, contact your private veterinarian or Local Land Services vets on 1300 795 299.

What are the symptoms of ear infections? - Dr. Harihara Murthy

The ear infections can be caused in different sites of the ear. The external ear, the middle ear very commonly, rarely in the inner ear. Pain is a very common feature of infection of the external ear. Fullness and drop in hearing may also be associated in external ear infections. The middle ear infections start with infections, pain start off with infections, pain which can vary from mild, moderate , dull pain, to intense sharp pain as well as in the level of haring to about 50% in some severe cases. Infections which can cause a perforation in the ear drum can cause a very significant hearing loss as well as discharge. So patient who has a discharge has an infection of the middle ear. Giddiness is a problem that is associated with infection of the inner era especially when the infection spreads from the other sites. Other than that the person can have loss of hearing. Infections of the ear can be divided into the external ear, middle ear, and the inner ear. Infections of the external ear will cause predominantly pain. Drop in hearing is a common feature and it can range in between 20 decibels to upto 50 decibels sometimes. Perforation of the ear drum will always be associated with ear discharge, the inner ear infections will invariably have drop in hearing as well as giddiness and sometimes tinnitus.

What are fevers and why might they be good for you?

The topic of which specific mechanism fevers act by is one of grand discussion which has also been fuelled by many myths and non-scientifically based assertions. This video provides an overview of the most prominent theories of the existence and action of fevers in immunological response. it discusses the processes that the human body undergoes while in a state of fever.

Discover what happens in your body when you have a fever and why its role in our immune response remains a mystery to scientists.

There are many mysteries around fever, but we do know that all mammals, some birds and even a few invertebrate and plant species feel fever’s heat. It has persisted for over 600 million years of evolution. But it has a significant cost: for every degree increase in temperature, there’s a 12.5% increase in energy required. So, why and how does your body produce a fever? Christian Moro investigates.
